Mstislav Dobuzhinsky was a Russian-Lithuanian painter and stage designer noted for cityscapes that captured the growth and decay of the early-20th-century metropolis. He read law at St Petersburg while studying privately, then trained under Anton Ažbe in Munich, before returning to Russia and joining the Mir Iskusstva circle, which idealized the elegance of the 18th century. He went on to a long career as a theatrical and book designer across Russia and the Baltic states before his death in emigration.
