Alexandra Exter, born Aleksandra Grigorovich in Białystok, was a leading Cubo-Futurist and Constructivist painter and designer who bridged the Russian, Ukrainian and Parisian avant-gardes. Her Kyiv studio became a gathering point for the city's artistic circles, and in Paris she moved among Picasso, Braque and other modernists while working extensively as a set and costume designer, notably for Alexander Tairov's Kamerny Theatre. She settled permanently in Paris in 1924 and remained an influential figure in Art Deco design until her death.
