Signed and dated in the lower left corner: “K/17” and on verso in Cyrillic: “Dear M. V. Сongratulations Anya and I” (Дорогой М. В Поздравляю от души я и Аня). The name Anya refers to Anna Shemyakina, the artist’s first wife. It’s known that he maintained friendly relations with her until leaving Russia. Nina Kand- inskaya (née Andreevskaya), the artist’s second wife, knew her well and in 1918, Vasily Kandinsky and Anna would often visit acquaintences and give them watercolors as souveniers.
